Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall
In the winter of 1980, this Pink Floyd #1 hit single, with its chorus of kids chanting “We Don’t Need No Education” is banned by the South African government. Black children, upset about the inferior eduction in that country, adopt the song as their anthem. The South African government says the song is “prejudicial to the safety of the state.”
Cyndi Lauper – She Bop
Made it to the bottom of the PMRC’s Filthy Fifteen list because of its frank references to masturbation.
Frankie Goes to Hollywood – Relax
Due to the suggestive single cover and lyrics, a BBC DJ pulled the song from rotation. Which of course only made it more popular. In fact, it was a modest #8 hit until its banning took it to #1
The Police – Invisible Sun
A song about the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the song received little airplay in the UK and the video was banned by the BBC and not shown on its chart program Top of the Pops.
