Buckeyes open fall practice with question mark at QB

COLUMBUS — Ohio State coach Ryan Day would like to see a starting quarterback emerge from his top two contenders.

But he’s also not ruling out playing both of them at the beginning of the season if Kyle McCord or Devin Brown don’t win the competition.

“Somebody has to emerge to be the starter (eventually),” Day said Wednesday, a day before the Buckeyes open practice. “And if you don’t know, you just keep pushing forward. I’d like for somebody to step up and for that to happen, but you just don’t know. Things happen.”

Both are right-handed NFL-style passers and former nationally recognized prep stars known for their accuracy.

The 20-year-old McCord has two years in the system and more playing time. The 19-year-old Brown got limited time in mop-up duty in 2022 and hasn’t thrown a college pass.

Day addressed reporters the day before the Buckeyes took to the field at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center for the first of 25 practice sessions leading up to the 2023 season opener at Indiana on Sept. 2.

A peek behind the curtain

Tickets to watch the first two practices of fall camp Thursday and Friday went on sale to the public last month for $30 apiece.

The university says the allotment of 500 tickets for each day was sold out in 75 minutes.

The money raised will go to the university’s Name, Image and Likeness partners.
