SANDUSKY – Cedar Point is giving one of its signature rides a reboot.
“Top Thrill 2,” scheduled to open next summer is billed as the world’s “tallest and fastest ‘triple-launch strata coaster.’”
It will also be the only dual-tower strata coaster in the world. A “strata coaster” is a roller coaster that is taller than 400 feet.
Employing “linear synchronous motor” technology, which creates a smooth, quiet ride, park officials say “Top Thrill 2” boasts a top speed of 120 mph and a height of 420 feet.
Park officials promise riders will hit speeds over 100 mph during three different launches and can experience weightlessness during three “free-fall” moments during the two-minute ride.
The ride starts with a 0-74 mph acceleration incorporates a “rollback” after the cars are launched forward, followed by a backward launch at 101 mph and rise on a vertical tower where a third launch sends the train upward at 120 mph to the top of a 420-foot tower, where the cars corkscrew through 270 degrees and descend to the “finish line.”
The park’s “Top Thrill Dragster” attraction has been closed since 2021, when a woman was injured by a falling piece of metal while waiting in line.
