Mayor Andrew Ginther plans to ride along with a Rumpke Waste & Recycling crew servicing the Westgate neighborhood on Monday, the first day of the expanded service.
The expansion was included in Ginther’s proposed 2023 operating budget and the Department of Public Service’s Refuse Collection Division has been putting a plan together with Rumpke.
Yard waste collection will continue to be carried out on a biweekly basis.
Doubling the number of pickup days per household is expected to increase the amount of recyclables collected by 25% to 40%, diverting those items from the landfill, Ginther said.
“Increasing the frequency of recycling to a weekly pickup is important because it will reduce the amount of waste sent to our SWACO landfill and help families reduce the amount of waste going in their waste receptacle,” said councilmember Emmanuel Remy, chair of the Environment Committee.
Ninety-five percent of locally collected recyclables go to businesses in the U.S. and the vast majority are used by manufacturers in Ohio and the Midwest, Ginther said.
