Eclipse-themed food is out-of-this-world

COLUMBUS – From beer to donuts, businesses in Ohio and other states along the path of totality during Monday’s total solar eclipse are rolling out a variety of solar- and eclipse-themed products.

Some towns and local vendors have been anticipating the celestial event and its huge crowds for years. There are oodles of special eclipse safety glasses for sale, along with T-shirts emblazoned with clever slogans and more astronomical souvenirs. Other offerings include eclipse-themed beer, specialty dining packages and watch parties at amusement parks, wineries and zoos.

In Tiffin, in northwest Ohio, Ballreich’s Foods has released its Eclipse Chips, which pairs white cheddar with black pepper for chips that are sold in black bags that feature totality’s likeness.

Near Cincinnati, the Donut Dude’s Solar Donuts is a box of seven donuts depicting the eclipse’s progression into and out of totality using raspberry, white cream, and custard donuts flanking both sides of a chocolate custard-filled donut.

Land-Grant Brewing in Columbus will release Totality Black IPA, in collaboration with COSI, made with espresso, berry and passionfruit. The brewery is also hosting an eclipse viewing party.

Tim Horton’s is releasing a is cream-filled donut topped with sweet icing and adorned with cookie crumbs in the shape of a crescent moon. Krispy Kreme is teaming up with Oreo to sell a limited doughnut-cookie creation.

Sonic Drive-In is selling a “Blackout Slush Float.”

And Frito-Lay’s SunChips has unveiled a new flavor that will only be available during the celestial event’s nearly 4 and a half minutes of totality.

MoonPie also kicked off a “Sun vs. Moon” smackdown-themed campaign as the chocolate snack maker promotes its “eclipse survival kit,” made up of four mini MoonPies and two pairs of eclipse glasses.
