What Ohioans need to know about the Total Solar Eclipse

A RARE CELESTIAL OCCURRENCE WILL HAPPEN IN OHIO ON APRIL 8

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will travel through Mexico, cross the United States from Texas to Maine, and exit North America along Canada’s Atlantic coast. Residents of a 124-mile wide swath of Ohio will witness a total solar eclipse, where the moon’s shadow is cast on the Earth as it passes between the Earth and the Sun. For those outside this path of totality, a partial eclipse will still be visible. A total solar eclipse is a rare and spectacular event. On average, one happens somewhere on the Earth only once every 1.5 years. Only 21 total solar eclipses have crossed the lower 48 states in the entire existence of the United States. Ohio’s last visible one took place over two centuries ago, in 1806. The next total solar eclipse in Ohio will be in the year 2099.

While the 2024 total solar eclipse in Ohio will last no more than five minutes, a partial solar eclipse will be visible before and after the total eclipse. Times of totality will vary throughout the viewing areas. Eclipse spectators who are outside the outer limits of totality will only be able to see a partial eclipse. The 2024 total solar eclipse will be an exciting experience for all who view it! Learn more about the path of the eclipse and view the NASA 2024 Total Solar Eclipse Map HERE.

Ohioans can extend their eclipse experience by indulging in additional out-of-this-world activities. Whether it’s stargazing in one of Ohio’s state parks or exploring the wonders of the universe at a planetarium, there’s plenty to explore in Ohio. “The eclipse won’t last long, but there is plenty more to experience when you extend your stay here in Ohio,” says Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development, which oversees TourismOhio. “From stargazing at one of our many state parks to exploring space at one of our many museums, you’ll discover all kinds of adventure here in the Heart of it All.”

State agencies who have taken the lead in preparing for the total solar eclipse on April 8 laid out their plans for protecting Ohioans and the thousands of visitors expected to flood the state to witness the rare celestial event.

TourismOhio is making planning even easier with a new all-in-one landing page featured at Ohio.org/Eclipse. The site includes a comprehensive map with the best places to watch the eclipse and an interactive list of viewing parties, festivals, and other events happening across the state. The website also includes other family-friendly ideas to make the most of the busy weekend, including the top stargazing spots and science museums.

“The eclipse is just the start of many must-do activities this coming April,” says Sarah Wickham, TourismOhio Director. “Ohio promises something for everyone in the family. Our updated website is the essential road map to navigating all there is to do before and after the eclipse—and we know it can’t be done in one trip! We hope the memories made this spring inspire return visits for years to come.”

TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE SAFETY TIPS

Safety is the number one priority when viewing a total solar eclipse. Remember, it’s never safe to look directly at the sun’s rays, even during a partial eclipse. Do not view any part of the bright sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the instrument as this will instantly cause severe eye injury. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun. They transmit thousands of times too much sunlight and could damage the eyes. The only safe method is to use special eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewers.

The auto club AAA suggests getting your car serviced and filled with gas before the big day. Do shopping and any chores beforehand because crowds will create lines in grocery stores and convenient stores and supplies may go quickly. If you plan to travel, pick your spot and check to see if reservations are needed and expect traffic jams.
