Name That Tune – Cher – If I Could Turn Back Time

“If I Could Turn Back Time” is from Cher’s 1989 album “Heart of Stone” and peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was a worldwide success and considered a “come back” for Cher. Song writing queen Diane Warren wrote the song epspecially for Cher, and had to beg her to record the tune, because Cher didn’t like the initial demo presented to her. “If I Could Turn Back Time” received even more notariety due to the video, which showed Cher in a scantily clad outfit performing for Navy sailors aboard the Navy ship, USS Missouri. At the time, the video was quite controversial and was banned from airplay on MTV until after 9pm. The Navy approved the video shoot, thinking that Cher would be in a pantsuit, and were surprised to see her appear in the revealing outfit. The Navy received some flack for approving the video, but at the time, thought it would be a good recruitment opportunity since they didn’t have an advertising budget in 1989. Cher’s son Elijah Blue appears in the video, playing guitar with the band.
