“Le Freak” is from Chic’s 1978 album C’est Chic and was their first number one song on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts. Le Freak also spent 7 weeks at number one on the disco chart and achieved sales of over 7 million copies.
The song commemorates the hot NYC club, Studio 54, for it’s long lines, exclusive clientele and discourteous doormen. According to guitarist Nile Rogers, the song was created in 1977 after he and bassist Bernard Edwards were refused entrance in to Studio 54 on New Years Eve, where they had been invited by Grace Jones. Grace forgot to notify the staff to put them on the guest list.
Le Freak is the best selling single of all time for Atlantic Records with over 13 million in sales around the world.
