I still remember the first time I heard this song; I was 9 years old and my family and I were living in California. We walked in to a pizza place and Whip It was playing on the jukebox. We had just moved back from overseas and it was the coolest song I’d ever heard to that point in my young life! LOL…and the video…well, it’s about the weirdest video I’ve ever seen.
Whip It is from Devo’s 1980 album Freedom of Choice and peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lead guitar riff in the song if based on the riff from Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman.” Whip It is ranked #62 on VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Hits of the 80s.
