“Sultans of Swing” is from Dire Straits 1978 self titled album and peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Mark Knopfler was inspired to write the song after witnessing a jazz band playing in the corner of a practically deserted pub in South London. At the end of their performance, the lead singer of the band announced they were the “Sultans of Swing”, Knopfler found the contrast between the group’s dowdy appearance and surroundings and their over the top name amusing. Eric Clapton joined the band in 1988 on guitar when they performed the song at Nelson Mandela’s 70th Birthday Tribute in London.
