“Boys of Summer” is from Don Henley’s 1984 album “Building the Perfect Beast” and peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song won Henley the “Best Male Rock Vocal Performance” Grammy and the melody was written by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell; originally intended for the Petty album “Southern Accents,” the melody didn’t fit with the rest of the album, so the melody was given to Henley to hear; Don wrote the lyrics and the rest is history. In an interview with Rolling Stone in 1987, Henley explained the song is about aging and questioning the past (a theme Don follows in many of his songs).
