The song is a Grammy Award winner and has been preserved in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as “culturally, historically or artistically significant.” Co-written by lyricist Dino Fekaris, he wrote the lyrics about being fired by Motown Records when he was a staff writer. The song has been covered by many over the years, including Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Selena and Cake.
