In honor of National Navy Day I pulled out an oldie but a goody!
“In The Navy” is from The Village People’s 1979 album “Go West” and peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 ( it would be the group’s last top ten hit). After the success of “YMCA,” a Navy spokesperson contacted the band’s manager, asking for similar song to act as a recruitment device for the US Navy and the band obliged, under one condition, that the Navy would help the Village People film a video. The Navy lent full support, including equipment and personnel, and the video was filmed on the deck of the USS Reasoner at the San Diego Naval Base. Due to the controversy surrounding The Village People, the spot was scrapped as the advertising tool is was intended to be. The Village People were one of the few groups in the 70s to shoot music videos for their singles, because they could be used for airplay and promotion in Europe.
