“We Are The World” by USA for Africa is a 1985 charity single written by Lionel Ritchie and Michael Jackson and produced by Quincy Jones. After the success of the Band Aid project for famine relief in Africa, Harry Belafonte suggested an American charity single to help with the African humanitarian efforts too. “We Are The World” was a huge success, selling over 20 million copies, one of the fewer than 30 all-time physical singles to sell at least 10 million copies worldwide and the fastest selling American pop single in history. “We Are The World” was certified quadruple platinum and won several awards (including 3 Grammys) and raised over 63 million dollars for humanitarian efforts in Africa (the equivalent of 147 million dollars today).
