Fair’s Big Buckeye

COLUMBUS – For a lot of people, the food is the highlight of the Ohio State Fair and it seems only natural that the world’s largest state fair – in the Buckeye State – should also boast the world’s largest buckeye.

The state Department of Agriculture will officially the world’s largest example of the peanut-butter-and-chocolate candy confection at the state fair Thursday afternoon.

Marsha’s Homemade Buckeyes from Perrysburg baked a buckeye, weighing in at at least 300 pounds, and have displayed it in the Bulk Candy tent at the fair.

The buckeye is 4 feet wide and 4 feet tall and was constructed from 75 pounds of peanut butter, 75 pounds of margarine and 150 pounds of powdered sugar, according to the department.

The confection took 4 1/2 hours to complete and was made in eleven different 28-pound batches. Each batch was molded together and topped off with more than 30 pounds of chocolate.

Marsha’s is part of the department’s Ohio Proud Marketing Program, which is marking its 25th anniversary, so the candy will be weighed by the department’s Weights and Measures officials.
