COLUMBUS – The fast-food chain that brought you the “slider” is now doing the “impossible.”
After a successful test run at 140 locations in New York, New Jersey and Chicago, Columbus-based White Castle is making the all-vegetable Impossible Slider available at all of its 377 restaurants in 13 states from New York to St. Louis starting Tuesday.
Since the veggie-slider debuted in April, scientists from Impossible Foods worked with White Castle to ensure that the plant-based burger would be compatible with the chain’s kitchen system.
The Impossible Slider is topped with smoked cheddar cheese, pickles, and onions and sells for $1.99.
More than 60,000 people have signed an online petition for other fast-food chains to follow suit and develop their own veggie burgers.
Stating that its mission is to eliminate the need for animals in the global food system, Impossible Foods makes meat directly from plants. Its flagship product – The Impossible Burger — debuted in 2016 and is now available in more than 3,000 restaurants, corporate dining halls, universities and other foodservice locations. Impossible Foods opened its first large-scale manufacturing plant a year ago in Oakland, Calif.
Founded in 1921, White Castle is considered America’s first fast-food hamburger chain.
